I still remember my first day of school very well. I was so CONFUSED as to what was going on. My mornings at home were suddenly replaced with waking up early and a new school bag. My parents were very excited that day. After I had gotten dressed, they had me stand on the front porch for pictures. My dad shined his burgundy colored camera at me while my mom kept telling me to stand by the flowerpot to pose. I think I started to cry because I did not know what was going on. I later realized they were about to send me to complete strangers for the entire day. But it was the day, the real journey began.
I remember my very first teacher, Teacher Lucy as we affectionately called her. She was the pillar of my early education. I remember Teacher Lucy spending extra time with me after school so I could learn how to write. In fact, we spent so much time together after school that I was eventually the flower girl at her wedding. I am grateful for her and the many teachers (formal and informal) that I have had throughout the years that have impacted my education.
Fast forward 20 years later, I now find myself working my dream job as a physician. Isn’t God good?! So how did I get here you ask? By God’s grace. I mean, yes, I put in the work but God is literally the one who carried me to where I am today. As I reflect on my one month working as a physician, I can’t help but share some of the ways of how I got here.
- God’s supernatural connections. God has always connected me to the right people at the right time. I call them divine connections. He connected me to friends who have turned family. God also placed me at the right doors at the right time. I just had to have the discernment to take bold steps through those doors. Even when I didn’t know what I was doing or whether that step was going to work, I still took those steps and guess what?! God was there the entire time.
- God’s unmerited favor. When you have God’s favor upon you, it changes the way people see you. God allowed individuals to see me in such a way that they became a blessing in my life and vice versa. Even when I failed or made mistakes, God’s favor still made me a winner. Trust me, I failed at many things, but those failures did not break me. When God favors you, everything turns out for your good.
- God’s deliverance. Roadblocks, obstacles, mistakes, bullies, doubts, lies of the enemy, you name it. When you are on a mission to fulfill God’s promise in your life, the enemy will try to bring you down. But as I stayed committed and connected to Him, He covered me in the midst of it all.
Do you see what the Lord has done? Man, am I grateful to God!
Deuteronomy 8:18 (NKJV)
18 “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.”
You may have a dream to pursue but may be unsure of how to achieve it. I’m telling you that with God on your side, you will get there. The road certainly wouldn’t be smooth. I say this all the time. My journey felt like I was jumping hurdles and balancing on tightropes with a blindfold on. But I made it and I am still making it! You can’t be paralyzed by the fear of failure or the fear of “oh this is too difficult” or else, you will never push yourself to make it to where you want to be. God has plans for you, but it cannot be achieved if you are not committed to having the Holy Spirit working with you.
If you really want something, trust God, put in the work and in the future, you will sit down and say to yourself, “oh, see what the Lord has done!”
